On February 16th, under glorious sunshine and a cheeky, fresh breeze, six adventurous women and Bill Chalker gathered at Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club ready to try something completely new — Radio Controlled sailing!
None of them had ever held the controls of an RC boat before (and one was just beginning her sailing journey altogether!), but that didn’t stop the excitement. This fantastic initiative from Emsworth Radio Sailing (ERS) set out to encourage more women to dive into one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports — and what a start it was!
After a lively and confidence-boosting briefing from top coach David Cockerill, each participant teamed up with an experienced sailor and their trusty boat. Then it was off onto the beautiful Emsworth Millpond for an hour of tacking, turning, laughing, and a little friendly competition.
By the time everyone came ashore, cheeks were rosy, confidence was soaring, and lots of smiles with hopefully a few new converts!
David Cockerill and the ERS team run RC training every Monday (rain or shine!), so if you fancy giving it a go, why not pop along and catch the RC sailing bug?
Thanks to Don Manson for his pictures.
